Just a "normal" Easter at home.....

Normal is a term used very loosely at my house, because it always begs the question: What it normal? One normal element of any holiday is that there is always a crowd and we'll get it anyway we can! This year, I dragged two college friends home with me and my dad invited two visiting colleagues who were visiting from China! My friends from college were from Texas and Michigan!

So Sunday morning my mom, AstroChem, Pipes, my two college friends and I trooped to church and met my dad and his colleagues there. Over the hum before the start of the service I could hear my dad at the other end of the pew explaining the basic tenants of Christianity to his colleagues. Church started and we sang the glorious resurrection hymns as well as giggled at the children's description of the "just plain chicken egg" that Pastor had brought to church.

After church we all trooped home to a lovely home cooked meal prepared my mother! Creamed corn, ham, green bean casserole, rolls, mashed potatoes, yams, and cheesecake for desert! Wish food was that good at school!

After lunch we decided to invite the Chinese to participate in the annual Easter egg hunt. Yes, two of the three siblings are in college and one is in high school and we still hunt Easter eggs every year! So the five young adults and two work colleagues waited in the living room with their chosen Easter baskets as the Easter "bunnies" worked their magic in the backyard. Once the "bunnies" had completed their work the six hunters poured out the back door scouring the ground for the brightly colored eggs!

Within a few minutes the hunt was over! Some of the hunters had large hauls, others not so much! :) Then another family tradition began: Pouring out all the contents of your eggs and then trading to get the candy you wanted and get rid of the candy you don't want!

Now as a TCK (Third Culture Kid) you think that your experiences have prepared you for pretty much anything, but this is not always the case! As our Chinese guests opened their eggs they came across two distinctly American candies, SweetTarts and Peeps. So I'll pose the question their question to you, "What is it?" How would you describe those candies to people who have no frame of reference for them? Needless to say it caused much consternation and hilarity. Consternation as we tried to explain the candies to the Chinese and hilarity as we watched the Chinese try SweetTarts for the first time!

Life, as evidenced above, always throws us curve balls to keep us interested and entertained! Hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend as you celebrated the joy of the resurrection of Jesus Christ!
